Week 8: Native American Culture (Part I)

 READ:  K – 4:  Small Wolf  by Nathaniel Benchley

5 – 6:   Indians of the Woodland (Before and After the Pilgrims) by Beatrice Siegel (read up to page 49 “What were the children like?”) OR Indians of the Northeast Woodlands by Beatrice Siegel (Note:  Parents, this book contains drawings of Native American men and women wearing very little clothing.  You may want to flip through the book first, before assigning it to your child.)

7 – 8:  The Wigwam and the Longhouse by Charlotte and David Yue (Chps 1 – 4 only)

DISCUSS:

  • What were some of the foods the Native Americans ate? (corn, deer, bear, fish, eels, clams, oysters, birds)
  • How did they use animal skins? (made them into clothes)
  • What types of tools did the Native Americans make? (canoes, bows & arrows, baskets, nets)
  • Name a typical pet of Native Americans? (dogs)
  • When did Native Americans wear feathers and paint? (special ceremonies & occasions, sometimes for war)
  • How did Native Americans and white men differ in their views of the land? (Native Americans didn’t believe people could own land; they thought all could share, didn’t believe in fences)
  • How did the white man’s way of life affect the Native Americans? (their animals ate the Indian’s crops and trampled on their fields, more and more white people came – taking up the land, sometimes they fought with the Native Americans, sometimes they stole their food.)
  • How did the weapons of the Native Americans and white men differ? (Indians had bows and arrows, spears; white men had guns)
  • Why did the Native Americans move? (sometimes they were forced off the land by white men; sometimes they chose to move)

ACTIVITIES:

K – 3: Make an Indian headdress similar to this one from freekidscrafts.com by clicking HERE.   You’ll need construction paper, scissors, glue, and a stapler.

4 – 6: Make a Native American Teepee using instructions from enchanted learning.com by clicking HERE.  You’ll need twigs, a brown, paper grocery bag, a rubber band or string, scissors, crayons, a pencil & tape.

7 – 8: Write an essay: “Three things I really appreciate about Native American culture”.  5 paragraph – 3 proof essay.

Pilgrims & First Thanksgiving

Week 7: Pilgrims & The First Thanksgiving (1621 A.D.)

 READ:  K – 3:  The First Thanksgiving by Linda Hayward

4 – 6:   Squanto and the first Thanksgiving by Joyce Kessel

7 – 8:  Squanto: Friend of the Pilgrims by Clyde Robert Bulla



DISCUSS:

  • Why did the Pilgrims leave England? (they  wanted religious freedom)
  • What was the name of the ship they sailed on? (Mayflower)
  • Why did so many Pilgrims die? (harsh, cold winter, not enough food)
  • Why were the Pilgrims so afraid of the Indians at first? (they were few in number, afraid Indians would attack them)
  • Which Indian came to help them? (Squanto)

DISCUSS GRADES 4 – 8:

  • How did Squanto know English? (Had been captured and taken to England as a slave)
  • Who was Massasoit? (Indian chief)
  • Why did they sign a peace treaty? (both groups were small; promised to help each other)
  • How did Squanto help the Pilgrims? (taught them how to plant  and find food)
  • Why did they have the feast? (to celebrate the harvest)
  • When did Thanksgiving become an official holiday? (in 1863 when Abraham Lincoln was president)

7 – 8: Squanto did not really belong to the Indian tribe of Massasoit and he did not really belong to the Pilgrims.  How do you think he felt?  If you were him, where would you prefer to live?  Why do you think he chose to spend more time with the Pilgrims? Write a 1 page commentary on these questions.

Week 6: Champlain   1605 A.D.

  • Where was Champlain born? (France)
  • What were some of Champlain’s skills? (mapmaker, writer, soldier, explorer, trader)
  • What business did he start with the Indians? (fur trade)
  • Describe his relationship with the Indians? (They got along well; he learned from their ways, travelled with them, fought with them, learned their language)
  • Which Indian tribe did he maintain a friendship with? (the Huron)
  • What famous city did he start in Canada? (Quebec)
  • Which Indian tribe did he fight against? (the Iroquois)  Why? (They were enemies of the Huron)

7 – 8: Samuel de Champlain wanted to find a water route across the continent.  Why would this be helpful to fur traders in particular and Europe in general?  Write a 5 paragraph, three proof essay.  (This essay question idea came from the “critical thinking” section on eduplace.com  Here is the link to  THIS WEBSITE)

Week 5: Pocahontas   1595 – 1617 A.D.

DISCUSS: 

  • When and where did Pocahontas first meet English settlers? (in Jamestown when she was 12)
  • Why was Pocahontas such an important figure?  (Her father was chief Powhatan, most powerful figure in the area)
  • Why was John Smith’s life spared? (Pocahontas threw herself upon him just before he was to be killed.)
  • What was the English settlers’ relationship with the Indians like after Pocahontas saved John Smith? (Powhatan sent the settlers food.)
  • John Smith promised to send the Indians weapons.  Did he? (no)

Jamestown Colony

  Week 4: Lesson Plan on Jamestown Colony   (1607 A.D.)

READ:  K – 3:  Our Strange New Land:  Elizabeth’s Diary Jamestown, Virginia, 1609  by Patricia Hermes (pgs 99 – end only)

4 – 6:   Our Strange New Land:  Elizabeth’s Diary Jamestown, Virginia, 1609  by Patricia Hermes (whole book)

7 – 8:  A New Look at Jamestown by Karen Lange

DISCUSS:

  • Where was the Jamestown settlement located? (in Virginia near the Chesapeake Bay)
  • Which Indian tribe controlled most of these lands? (Powhatan)
  • What type of people chose to inhabit the Jamestown settlement? (Indentured servants, poor, homeless, gentlemen from high-ranking wealthy families looking for adventure)
  • What were some good and bad qualities of most of the “gentlemen” who came to the settlement? (knew how to operate muskets, in charge of protecting the community, many were lazy and did not want to work, were not helpful to the community in building, planting, etc.)
  • What metal did the Indians value? (copper)
  • Who were the chief translators between the Indians and the English? (boys)
  • Many people died in the Jamestown settlement.  What were the major causes? (famine, many didn’t know how to farm or fish and didn’t want to try, leaders argued with each other, salty, polluted river was their drinking water, drought)

Questions for grades 7 – 8:

  • What crop became a huge money-maker for the colonists? (tobacco)
  • Peace finally came between the English and Chief Powhatan.  Why? (marriage of Pocahontas and John Wolfe)
  • After Powhatan died how did things change for the English? (New Indian chief unfriendly to English, ordered an attack killing ¼ of the population, English settlers continued to suffer from disease & unhealthy conditions)
  • Why was Jamestown so significant in our country’s history? (really beginning of America’s history, story of perseverance)

ACTIVITIES:

 K – 3: View some of the Jamestown drawings from this website.  Ask  your child to draw a picture of Jamestown similar to one from this site.  http://www.virtualjamestown.org/gallery2.html

4 – 6: Pretend you are a newspaper reporter.  Write a newspaper article about the “Starving Time” you see at the Jamestown colony.

7 – 8: If you had to choose between being one of the leaders (like John Smith) of the Jamestown community or just an average citizen there,  what  would you choose and why? Write an essay.
