Week 3: Greek & Roman Gods

 

READ:  K – 6:  The Gods and Goddesses of Olympus by Aliki

7 – 8:  D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths by Ingri & Edgar Parin D’Aulaire (pgs 1 – 70 only)

 


DISCUSS:

  • Who were the Titans? (the first 12 children of Gaea earth and Uranus sky)
  • Describe the Cyclopes & the Hecatoncheirs? (monsters born to Gaea & Uranus.)
  • Why did Uranus throw the Cyclopes & Hecatoncheirs to the Underworld? (they were ugly)
  • After overthrowing Uranus, why did Cronus eat his children? (afraid one of them would overthrow him)
  • How did Zeus survive? (mother tricked Cronus into eating a stone, hid away Zeus)
  • How did Cronus throw up his other children? (tricked into eating/drinking a magical herb)
  • What was Zeus the god of? (head god, god of sky & weather)
  • What Poseidon the god of? (sea)
  • What was Hades the god of? (underworld; death)
  • Why was Hera always mad at Zeus? (he was always with many other women)
  • What was Hephaestus the god of? (metal working, chariots, weapons, & tools)
  • What was Aphrodite the goddess of? (love)
  • Describe Eros? (cupid; baby god; shot arrows of love and desire into people)
  • What was Ares the god of? (War)
  • What was Athena the goddess of? (wisdom)
  • What was Hermes the god of? (messenger, thieves, herald)
  • What was Artemis the goddess of? Who was her twin brother?(moon, wildlife, hunting, chastity; Apollo)
  • What was Apollo the god of? (sun, music, poetry)
  • Describe the story of Demeter & Persephone? (Hades wanted to marry Persephone and kidnapped her.  Demeter controlled the seasons and made everything die and turn to winter; Zeus ordered Hades to send Persephone back but she had eaten 4 seeds from the underworld so every year she now spends 8 months with her mother (Spring – Fall) and 4 months down below (winter)
  • What was Dionysus the god of? (wine)
  • What was Hestia the goddess of? (hearth, protector of households)
  • Where did the Ancient Greek gods live? (Mount Olympus)
  • Why do you think the Ancient Greeks & Romans had so many gods? (answers will vary)

Questions for Grades 5 – 8:  The Ancient Greeks & Romans had the same gods, but different names for those gods.  Check out this site to find the Roman names: http://mistupid.com/mythology/.  Discuss: Do any of these Roman names look familiar? Does this surprise you?  Why or Why not?
