6 – 8:  Who Was Queen Elizabeth by June Eding OR Elizabeth I by Simon Adams  

Note:  The name of Elizabeth’s family line was “The Tudors”.  People call the time of Queen Elizabeth’s rule, when there was peace and prosperity, as “The Elizabethan Age.”

Discuss:

  • Why did Elizabeth’s father, King Henry, start the church of England? (Wanted to divorce his wife, Catholic church wouldn’t allow it.)
  • Why did Henry want a son so badly? (felt kingdom should go to a son; believed a woman couldn’t rule the kingdom)
  • Was King Henry happy when Elizabeth was born? (no; wanted a son)
  • Did Elizabeth expect to be queen someday? (no)  Why? (Father married third wife, who bore him a son.)
  • Why wasn’t Elizabeth’s brother Edward king for long? (died, bad health)
  • Who became queen after Edward’s death? (Elizabeth’s older sister, Mary)
  • Why weren’t the English people happy with Mary as their queen? (she married the future king of Spain, she changed the religion of England to Catholicism)
  • Why did Elizabeth become queen? (Mary died)
  • What made Elizabeth a good queen? (tolerant of people’s religious views, made wise decisions to keep country out of war, visited the common people, listened to advisors, encouraged the theatre)
  • Did Queen Elizabeth ever marry? (no)

Questions for Grades 6 – 8:

  • What was the name of Elizabeth’s family line? (The Tudors)
  • T/F Elizabeth’s life was threatened several times. (T)
  • T/F Elizabeth was well educated. (T)
  • T/F Elizabeth received many marriage proposals. (T)
  • Who was Mary, Queen of Scots? (Elizabeth’s Catholic cousin who wanted the throne of England, plotted to kill Elizabeth)
  • What was the Elizabethan Age? (Time of Elizabeth’s rule, time of peace and prosperity)
  • Did Elizabeth have any children? (no)
  • Who became king when Elizabeth died? (Mary, Queen of Scot’s son, James)

2 – 3: Complete one of the following 2 worksheets:

4 – 6:Elizabeth’s family line was called “The Tudors”.  Complete the following worksheets about “The Tudors”:  http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/rich_and_poor_food_tudor_workheet.pdf

Then, write a few paragraphs on ONE of the following topics:

  1. In what ways was Elizabeth a great Queen?
  2. Many people have desired to be part of the nobility or royal families.  What were some advantages of being part of this class?  What were the disadvantages?

Then, write a short essay on ONE of the following topics:

  1. In what ways was Elizabeth a great Queen?
